Artsonje Center at Seoul presents Korean contemporary photography in the exhibition, Article 39(2) from 6th Dec., 2008 to 15th Feb., 2009. Gyoo Sik Kim, NOH, Suntag, Seung Woo Back, Young Hoon Lee, and Jae Hong Jeon show works that reflect recent shifts in Korean contemporary photography. ¡Ü These artists use photography as a strategic medium in different senses and ways of seeing approaching images of military culture and traces of war in everyday life but easily overlooked. The images of war and military culture face diverse circumstances in ordinary life, which clash with individual and collective situation in current Korean society. Those images exist in the middle of ordinary life such as magazines, toys, buildings and commercial events, connected with capitalist structure and indifference to violence. ¡Ü Five participating artists use photographs in their own strategic ways to express irony and riddle inside the process of transferring objects to photographic images. For that reason,objects in their photographs are contextually transformed inside a structure of photography as well as outside elements of images such as culture and commodity which dominate Korean society. ¡Ü Moreover, the artists do not only produce fragmentary images of a specific situation in Korea but also attempt to draw photographic images into the dimension of knowledge through a long term project based on research and observation. Their images are not just delivering information or aesthetics in photography. Rather, they are stepping into the system of knowledge as well as presenting visual senses. ¡á HANKEUMHYUN
